moab in the fall

i couldn't believe how much snow was in the yard when we pulled in the driveway from our weekend in moab. i knew it was supposed to snow, but then seeing it is another thing. it snowed just a skiff down south. it covered up the remaining golden leaves around where we stayed. the red rock in the distance was frosted with a touch of snow that melted off by the time we left yesterday afternoon.
we went to moab with our friends, the sheridan's (melinda and russ), and howell's (bryce's sis - carie and family). the ride down typically takes 4 1/2 hours. we planned it perfectly so that erik would sleep for a bit of that. of course the one thing we couldn't plan for was the freeway shutting down in slc and having to take a 90 minute detour. oh well. Luckily, christian got a car dvd player for his bday which helped entertain the kids on the journey. we got to the condo at moab springs ranch early evening (thanks nate and dee!) let the boys run around for awhile before dinner and packet pick up.
bryce and melinda both ran the 50k on saturday. it had rained hard that night and really brought the temps down. i was secretly worried that the race would get washed away or something. by 8 that morning, the temps had come up and there was never any doubt that these hard core runners wouldn't go through with the task at hand. while these two were running, the rest of us went out to corona and bowtie arches with the kiddos. the kids did great on the 3 mile loop. my nephew, 3 year old little parker, stole my heart when he picked up a stick at the trail head and began to ascend up the path. i also give props to russ's pug, yoda, for the great hiker he was. christian is an expert hiker at age ten. he loves to lead and find the carins.
once again i missed bryce at the finish. he was sooo fast, he finished an hour earlier than he had estimated. this is the 6th or 7th ultra this year and he keeps on getting better and better. we all got there and he had been hanging out already for a bit. it was great to see him smiling and hanging out with the other runners, although i feel bad that i've missed his last few finishes. please run slower next time sweetheart. the good thing though, is that we were right there when melinda finished. she did amazing for her first ultra and seriously looked like she had hardly broken a sweat. great job melinda!
we had a nice afternoon and then headed out for dinner at la hacienda. (where my car got keyed - ggrrrrr!!!) after dinner we headed over to the grocery store and met this amazing pair who were biking from anchorage, ak to tierra del fuego, argentina. they weren't the typical hippy type that one might think about being in moab. they were very clean cut, had these bikes with gear all over and looked very cold standing outside the store with their map. phil and manu from austria had been on the road already since july and were planning on an 18 month adventure in total. woah. the 50k didn't seem all that bad after that conversation. they were camping and totally self-sufficient, but with the cold and the rain seemed like they could use a dry place to camp out and shower. here's their blog - but it's in german. what an amazing adventure they are on.
the kids had sooo much fun this weekend. erik is at the age where he understands how to play/interact with other kids. he loved getting to know his little friends/cousins and had such a fun time running around.
we all had a great time running around. coming back to the snow doesn't seem all that bad when you have strengthened relationships with friends and family and made some great memories.

Sounds like a great weekend, despite the unfortunate keying incident. Bryce is amazing!!!
Love all the pictures and links.

That is too bad about your car. I really cannot fathom running that long so many times in a year. I am planning on a good 5 years between marathons. Way to go Bryce!
