tiger dog

i've been taking mack running with me the past few mornings. he needs the exercise (as do i) and he pulls me up the hills that i'm not ready to tackle by myself yet. mack loves his retractable leash and proudly has to keep part of it in his mouth whether we're running, walking or cruising into petsmart for a bath. these past few mornings, i've been impressed with how he's listened and stayed relatively close to me even after letting out more slack on his leash. sometimes he tries to wanders a gutter for a sip of muddy, pineview sprinkler run-off puddles, or maybe there's a nice stick he'd like to pick up and carry the rest of the way (but then he'd have to drop his leash). just as we were about a mile from finishing our run, there was a bird a few 20 feet away from us in the street. now, mack is a golden retriever, but don't let the retriever part fool you. he gets nervous at just about everything; balloons, the christmas tree, leaves falling out of a tree, etc. well, there must have been an audio feed from my tunes through the leash because at the same time "eye of the tiger" hit my ears, mack took off pulling me towards the poor robin.
needless to say, mack the tiger scared himself from the jerk back of the leash and me yelling at him to stop and the little birdie flew away. i appreciated that jolt of speed that mack provided for me this morning that truly increased my HR and made my run time faster then yesterday's.
